If it was scanned it most likely was inported into word as a graphic file,
in which case the text of the original is a picture of text. A scanner
makes a picture of what is put into it. For you to be able to read it it
must first be put through an ocr application to convert the picture of text
back into text. Ask the people who did the scanning if they have an ocr
application, it is often part of the software that comes with scanner
software packages.
