A publication of the Central Blind Rehabilitation Center
Hines, IL
Fall 2003 Issue

Surf the CBRC
             by Jim Burns
The Central Blind Rehabilitation Center (CBRC) staff is proud to
announce
the launching of a new facility-specific web site. The site was made
available to the public in early October, and can be found at
www.va.gov/hinesblindrehab (.)

The decision to create this site resulted from a recommendation given
by the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.
They suggested that the CBRC find more ways to communicate our
services to veterans, other agencies, and stakeholders. The site's
content was assembled by BRC staff and then given to Michelle Wilson,
a Computer Specialist in the Hines Information Resource Management
department. Ms. Wilson then converted the material into a web page.

Initially the site was only going to provide information about Hines. As
staff gathered information, it developed into more. This site also acts
as a public education tool where information about VA, State, and
private blind rehabilitation services may be obtained. If you cannot
find information related to blind rehabilitation on this site. then
you will
be directed to other resources.

Other examples of information that is found on our site include what we
do during an average day at the CBRC and information about the
veterans we serve. Everything from the application process to
membership in the Hines Blind Center Alumni Association is included.
You will read the testimonials of veterans and their families indicating
how training has impacted their lives. Testimonials of veterans taken
during various stages of training are also provided. There is a photo
gallery and many links to other agencies and organizations. Finally,
outcome information is provided for other rehabilitation institutions.

Careful steps were taken to ensure this web site is section 508
compliant.
This basically means the site is accessible to individuals who are
visually
impaired. It is the hope of the CBRC staff that individuals with failing
vision, or their relatives, will wander upon this site while seeking
information about rehabilitation or eye conditions. From there they
will be
able to find the best possible help for their individual situation.
