As a follow-up to the beeping noises made upon moving my mouse, and the red light flashing on the front of my computer, I can now tell you all that indeed it must have been a mouse gone bad.  I purchased a new mouse and after attaching it to the computer, I no longer have the beeping noises, or the red lights or the freezing up thing that was indeed getting so annoying.  So this time, for 10 bucks my problems have been solved.  Wish it was always this easy.  lol
