Is your USB port working?  Does it show in Device Manager with at least two lines (something like "PCI to USB Bridge" and "USB Root Hub")?  Yours may have different words but there has to be at least two lines.  Some USB devices require that they be connected to the computer's USB and not through a hub for them to work properly.
