Actually, I know of a case where I periodically need to do this:

  The "network device" is a 10/100 hub, inserted specifically to allow me to
"sniff" (capture for analysis) network traffic passing that point.
Unfortunately, the hub inserts a bridge between its 10Mbps and 100Mbps
clients, so if my PC defaults to 100Mbps, I will not see any of the unicast
10Mbps traffic.  I have to force the PC to 10Mbps for that.
