Terri and others who may be interested:

While Google's Gmail option does, indeed work fine with a screen
reader, it's just a nod toward accessibility, as far as I understand
the situation.

I hope I am not fully informed, in fact.

 From what I've been able to read and understand, the HTML interface
only provides SOME of the features and functionality of the "normal"
GUI interface.  For example, have those who use the HTML gmail
interface been able to use the ability to label?

Google may be trying, but it has by no means embraced accessibility
for ALL (not just blind folks) from the ground up.

Hey, but at least they recognize the importance of including alt
attributes on images when they're trying to get good PR.  That's a start.
