The Cable Car:

Another way of using steam power was to build cable
cars like the ones seen today in San Francisco.
Between the rails there was a conduit holding a
loop of steel cable moved by a large steam engine
at the end of the line.

A slit in the road made it possible for a mechanism
attached to each car to grip the cable whenever
the gripman wanted to get the car moving.  Invented
by Andrew Hallidie in 1873 to conquer the hilly
streets of San Francisco, this system of traction
was soon adopted in many American cities.

It was less popular in Europe because of high costs
of installation, but in Edinburgh a complete cable-car
system was constructed in 1888 and remained in use
until 1922-23.  It was horrendously complicated.

For example, where two lines crossed, one of the
cables went over the other one, and the gripman
using the lower cable had to carefully estimate
the right moment to pull up the grip of his car.
If he did so too late, it would hit the upper cable
with catastrophic results.
