Hi Jerry;
No I don't guy the r8 and I haven't had any trouble.  I am using a five foot
tripod that I had installed when I had work done on the roof.  The antenna
will take the wind the real concern was the tripod or chimney in your case.
Its at least a two person job. Its not all that heavy but raising and
lowering it is a bit hard because its long and you are holding it at the
bottom.
I'm curious as to how you settled on the r8 rather than some others out
there?
