Well, it looks like it's getting down to the idea of calling Kenwood up and
asking the question.  I don't run the radio as a base unit as long as you
do, but maybe over an extended period of time running the radio as a base
unit for several hours at a time was enough to harm the battery pack.
Interesting thing is they don't seem to say anything about it in the
instruction book.

So, will have to call Kenwood, and ask them directly.

At least I have another spare battery pack to use if the original one has
bitten the dust.
