I actually make my own bread - have done so for about 30 years, partly
through habit! The information that follows I've taken from the latest
edition of Coeliac Link, the NZ Coeliac magazine.
1 The Gluten and Wheat Free Marx Bakery ( Auckland )
www.marxbakery.co.nz
Products are available in Christchurch at Fresh Choice Barringtons,
Barrington Street, Christchurch. Ph. 3371129
At Timaru: Golden Harvest, 27Stafford Street, Timaru.
2 The Gingerbread Man: 261 Greers Road, Christchurch. Fax (03) 359 7812
( Greers Road is about half way between the airport and the central
city. ) They bake gluten-free bread daily but your requirements need to
be pre-odered. They will send me a list of their gluten-free products
and I'll scan it and email it to you as an attachment after it arrives
here.
3. Orgran Gluten free/Wheat free products. Available in health food
stores and some Woolworths and New World supermarkets.
4. Breakfast cereals - available in supermarkets: ( none of these
contain malt as per NZ definition of gf. )
Hubbards - Thank Goodness
Hubbards - Just The Bees Knees ( just coming on to the market )
Healtheries - Wheat and Gluten Free Muesli
( There are others avialable also )
5. Jackson's Bakery and Licensed Cafe 33 New Brighton Mall
Christchurch. Bread is baked on Sundays to order. Have a wide range of
GF products
6. Nelson: Dovedale Bread Bakers of GF,Wheat free, Yeast free Breads.
Apparently available from organic health shops and selected
supermarkets. Their email is [log in to unmask] if you want to
follow this up.
Coeliac Society of NZ Christchurch contact: Natalie Johnston (03) 942
0062
email: [log in to unmask] who I am sure will be able to supply
useful info. including 'coeliac safe' restaurants etc in ChCh.
7. If you go to the NZ Manufactured Food database, www.mfd.co.nz and
click on 'gluten-free' you will get a list of a good number of the gf
foods avialable in NZ.
There are plenty of 'GF' rice biscuits in supermarkets.
Caution: Be careful if purchasing fresh slices of ham from a
supermarket. Some brands have wheat/gluten as glazes etc. Ask to see the
ingredient label that will be put on the packet before you make a
purchase. We actually ask our supermarket to run off a copy of all the
different labels of their current ham products so that we know what's
OK.
