Friends,
I posted an 11th hour turkey day query Wednesday night, asking if
Campbell's cream of mushroom soup is gluten free. I got a ton of kind
replies. Thanks very much. The answer turned out to be such a no-brainer
(No, it is not GF; "wheat" is listed as an ingredient on the label, I'm
told) that I'd hesitate to send out a summary except some of the replies
had additional information, so I'll share a few:
Did you check the ingredients? I'm 99% sure it contains wheat. I have a
good substitute recipe on this other excellent site:

Try Progresso Cream of Mushroom. It is not a condensed soup so you can
skip part of the the liquid called for in the recipe or add some
cornstarch to thicken it up a bit, depending on the recipe.
. At one Time Pregresso had a soup that was gluten free but they no
longer make it. They do have a Creamy Mushroom Soup but it isn't
condensed like Campbell's. I do miss being able to cook with that soup.
I just make my own soup now to have on hand. I just freeze it in
batches.
If it is any help to you, look for wheat flour, modified food starch, or
modified corn starch.
You may also need to question any tomato paste ingredient as it is
usually thickened and celiacs cannot have what it has been thickened
with. There are also many spice extracts in soups. Some commercial
spices use caking agents to keep spices fresh. I make all my own soups
and only buy organic spices to ensure my food is 100% gluten-free.
For cream of mushroom we resort to a Portabello soup product that is
generally available in health food stores. It is quiate thin so we
thicken it with corn starch or rice flour.
If you call Campbell's they will mail you a gluten free product list.
Progresso's cream of mushroom soup is gluten free, as is the Imagine
"creamy portobello" mushroom soup in the paper cartons (which you may be
able to find in the health food section of your local supermarket or
your local health food store).
