Thank you for responding so quickly.  I apologize for the delay in responding.  My son badly broke his arm tobogganing, and
have been dealing with surgery, etc.

To address your questions:
"Did you check your BIOS and make sure the floppy was enabled?
Do you see the floppy as a recognized device on system boot up, the
black screen
before windows starts.  Does it show up in the windows device manager.
Is there a yellow ! Or red X on the device?"

Question 1:  I don't know how to check the BIOS to see if the floppy is enabled.  Could you lead me through that if you have time?  I did a search on 'Google', but I was only able to learn what a BIOS is - I couldn't find how to check for the floppy.
Question 2:  I did see the CD as a recognized device at system boot up, but not the floppy (which may mean I just didn't see it).
Question 3:  The floppy is presently listed in the device manager, and yes, it is marked yellow with an black exclamation point.

My two main concerns is that if the floppy stops working completely, (it works sporadically) I won't be able to backup my stuff, and if I have a system crash, I wouldn't be able to re-load anything from disk - I'd be sunk!
