No, no, no........
Go to "Control Panel"......"Adminstrative
Tools"........."Services"......then double click on "Automatice
Updates"....click on the "Stop" button....and once it's stopped(should take
2-5 seconds)....change the "Start up type" to "disabled".....click
"Apply"...then "OK"............

Subject: [PCBUILD] Win 2000 "Stay Current with Automatic Updates"
I just installed Win 2000 Professional. As I remember, I never did find a
way to get rid of the horrible globe icon at the lower right which is
constantly trying to talk me into signing up for automatic updates for
Windows, or to get rid of the horrible text bubble it shoots when I boot.
How do I get rid of them? (I seem to remember seeing somewhere that it
involves hand editing the registry, but I'm willing to do that to kill the
monster.)
Thanks.
David.
