Momodou Lamin Nyassi, the head chief of Foni Kansala District, was Monday arrested by personnel of the Gambia National Army stationed at Kanilai and sent to Mile Two Prison together with two other villagers for allegedly stealing President Jammeh’s Ramadan gift for his district.

Sources yesterday told the Daily Observer that the Foni Kansala District was given 1000 bags of sugar and 1000 bags of rice and the chief was reported to have sold 100 bags of each in Brikama.

Chief Nyassi, together with the APRC youth leader, Bubai Sanyang and the APRC constituency chairman, Ndongo Mboob are said to have sold 18 bags of rice to a Mauritanian businessman, Lamin Narr Faal.

The soldiers stormed Bwiam village and arrested five elders including the Chief.

They were then taken to Kalagi Police Station where they were questioned. Bubai Sanyang and Lamin Narr were later released. The Source further said that more arrests were made in the village.

The police spokesman Aziz Bojang could not be reached for comment as he was said to be in Canada.
An insider at the Kalagi Police Station confirmed the story and said: “What the chief did is very bad. He should have set a good example. We are very much dismayed.”

“This gift should not be used otherwise. A gift is a gift. Some people don’t have mercy, not even taking into consideration the month of Ramadan,” another Police source said.

Some bags of sugar and rice were said to be recovered from the arrested men.
