Brother Sheih Tejan,
That was really utimely and devastating for Mr. Bah's family and friends.
I can't remember Eda but I do recall most of the rest of the team,
amongst those mentioned by Brother Sanusi. Essa Bob alias Sukuro lived
briefly in Stockholm before moving on to I-don't-know-where. We really
got to know one another during mass detention at Bakau primary school
following the 1981 Kukoi rebellion - so many young, strong and handsome
Gambians just tucked away.
In our private chit-chats at christening ceremonies over here subjects
such as the death frequency of young Gambians sometimes come up. Among
adults, say Gambians between 45 and 70, our impressions here is that most
die of diabetes and/or hypertension. Malaria seems to be a frightening
killer too, especially among children. But what accounts, to a larger
degree, for the frequent deaths of young Gambians? What do people discuss
at home, when youth pass away so suddenly? Do Gambians at home discuss
the fatalism in the excessive consumption of sugar during Ramadan; the
permanent drinking of sugar in "attaya", and the consumption of animal
fats high on LDL (low density lipoproteins) that can cause
atherosclerosis - often the culprit in cases of hypertension?
Death is an unpopular subject anywhere. But with us, social taboos and
religion-inspired fear makes it even more difficult to talk about death.
(I know quite a decent number over here who begin to do their five
dailies as soon as they learn of the death of a friend or acquaintance).
Is there any authority, say medical and health or central statistics,
that collects data relating to cause(s) of death in Gambia to enhance
research?
While I was last in Gambia, I saw a television programme in which large
groups of rural women where quizzed on basics of primary health care. The
one who correctly answered the presenter's questions wins a prize such as
a mosquito net. Given the circumstances, the availability of resources, I
thought that really was commendable television. Are there programmes run
on radio or tv where medical practitioners advise on diabetes,
hypertension, cancer, or other common killers in Gambia?
Sorry for the trouble. I am perhaps just scared that we die very young
and very frequently too.
Chi Jaama,
Sidibeh
