Nigeria and Cameroon head to semis
By Mark Gleeson
BBC Sport, Johannesburg

Nigeria and Cameroon both qualified for the semi-finals of the African
Women's Championship with Group B victories on Saturday.

Nigeria won top place in the group with an expected 3-0 win over Mali in
Pretoria, and now play Ethiopia in Tuesday's semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Cameroon survived an early scare to fight back strongly and
defeat Algeria 3-1 in Germiston.

Cameroon progress to a tough clash against Ghana's Black Queens in Tuesday's
other semi-final, with both ties to be played in Johannesburg.

A defensive Algerian side took the lead after just 12 minutes from Nabila
Imloul and then retreated into their own half to take on wave after wave of
Cameroonian attacks.

Cameroon's failure to break down the defence saw them lose confidence, but
after Noelle Mbida equalised just before the half-hour their game lifted
dramatically.

Mbida struck home a second goal in the 72nd minute, sneaking in unmarked at
the back post to score from close range.

Substitute Cecile Mekongo scored a second goal in as many games to make sure
of the victory that Cameroon needed to reach the semi-finals.

Algeria finished third in the group with three points while Mali went home
with just one.

Perpetua Nwocha scored twice for Nigeria in a pedestrian win over the
outclassed Malians to see the Falcons end with seven points from their three
games.

Cynthia Uwak had opened the scoring early on in the game.

Ethiopia, who clinched their place on Friday, are the only newcomers in the
final four from the last African women's championship played in Nigeria two
years ago.
