Hello,

Freedom Scientific, the company that produces JAWS, generally offers to
upgrades a year. Once a year, usually in the fall about September or
October, a major upgrade is released with many new features and
up-to-date support for major software releases. The most recent major
upgrade was version 5.0. Major upgrades require the payment of a fee,
either for that particular upgrade or as part of a software maintenance
agreement.

Minor upgrades are usually released in the spring, about February, and
include many bug fixes from the major upgrade and a few enhancements.
The most recent minor upgrade was JAWS 4.51.

Increasingly, software is being distributed online in addition to or as a
replacement of a CD ROM. If the user lacks an authorization disk for
JAWS 5.0 it will run in demonstration mode until a proper authorization
disk is inserted with a license that includes version 5.0.

If you want a demonstration disk in which JAWS will work for half an hour
before it stops, needs to be closed, and re-opened again, you may wish to
call Freedom Scientific and ask for a CD which they can send for free.
If you do not have a high speed connection, re-starting a download from
an executable often does not yield positive results.

Kelly

> Hi all:
> I have a question about the new JFW 5.0 upgrade. I saw that on the
hj.comwebsite, you can download the new upgrade for free.. I have tried
this, however, the file is 32 MB in size, and I'm guessing I should also
have the authorization disc? So, I don't have the authorization disc, and
I guess the only way I could download this, is if had a zip drive. I
have a PC (running windows 98) and only have 64 MB of ram, and I also
have a NoteTaker, and both took so long, to download. But after all
that, I don't even have the file. But correct me if I'm wrong, but I do
believe it was free.
