Yes, you can and you can even buy signal boosters, but if the signal is not
getting out, it cannot be spoofed right?

No contradiction at all. It's all about the sensitivity/quality of your
receiving antenna. The built-in antennas in home wireless networking
equipment may only cover 100-200 feet. I can build a dircectional =
antenna
that will cover a much greater distance with a few dollars and a =
pringles
potato chip can. Type the words "pringles wireless networking antenna" =
into
google. I can buy a commercially made antenna that will allow me to =
snoop
even further down the road.

There is a bit of contradiction here. If range is such a factor, then
presumably, someone would have to get pretty close to your pc to be able =
to
hack it. One factor that will mittigate this is if the wap is not close =
to
a window. When I go outside my building, I cannot access my wap from
anywhere outside. I live on the bottom of my building and while someone
might access it from upstairs, I have tried with a laptop to do this and =
it
does not seem reliable if at all possible. One thing to remember is =
that
you need a good firewall in your wlan setup and I recommend as do many
others that it be built into the hardware.

Wireless products may claim that they can cover a certain distance, but =
it
is very dependent on factors such as building composition and background
electromagnetic interference. Also, your network speed degrades with
distance from the router. Wireless coverage can also be spotty due to
antenna design, and you may need to position your router or computer for
best reception. In other words, there is no guarantee that any =
particular
wireless router is the best choice for your situation.

Security should be a BIG concern. Learn how to use the security features =
of
your wireless router and make sure they are enabled. Avoid older =
wireless
equipment that uses the WEP standard for encryption. The newer WPA =
standard
is much more secure. Traffic on a wireless network can be snooped on =
from
miles away. The old WEP protocol is easily hacked.

I am finally going to get cable Internet at home and have a question =
that

may be a dumb one. I am purchasing the cable modem from my cable =
company,

and I want a couple of computers at home to have access to the =
connection.

The company told me that I need to buy a wireless router, as one of the

computers is in the church h I pastor, about 100 feet away.

I found a wireless router that should be more than adequate to cover the

distance, but I know nothing about such matters. Are there any other

concerns I need to be aware of as I purchase the wireless router?

Thanks for any advice you can give, and Happy New Year to all!
