It sounds as though your video driver is not loading.
Look in msconfig for video-related items (You'll need to know the
manufacturer of your video card, such as NVIDIA or ATI).
You could also re-install the video driver, or just re-enable all
msconfig items, then disable them one at a time to locate the proper item.
Msconfig can be a very powerful tool, as you have learned, and sometimes
requires a little research to avoid unexpected results.
Post any suspect entries and we may be able to offer advice. A Google
search will usually resolve any questions you may have on individual items.
