I was glad to read in the July/August 2003 issue of "Digest Health &
Nutrition" magazine an article entitled "Migraines Possibly Associated
with Celiac Disease." The following is the text.

'According to a recently published study, migraines may be linked to
celiac disease, a condition in which the body cannot tolerate gluten.
Of 90 patients diagnosed as migraine sufferers, four had celiac disease.
The four patients were put on a gluten-free diet and instructed not to
take any medicine for their migraine attacks other than over-the-counter
anti-inflammatory drugs. After six months, one patient had no migraine
attacks, while the other three experienced significant improvements in
the severity, frequency and duration of their attacks.

"The improvement observed in both symptoms and cerebral blood flow after
a gluten-free diet is intriguing," write Maurizio Gabrielli, MD, and
colleagues from Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy. "If larger,
randomized, controlled trials confirm these preliminary findings,
serological screening for celiac disease could be proposed as part of
management of migraine and the gluten-free diet as the first-line
therapy in the subgroup of patients with evidence of CD." This study is
a step in the direction of finding the causes of migraines and celiac
disease.

Digestive Health and Nutrition (FDHN). The FDHN raises funds in support
of the American Gastroenterological Association's research and
educational programs.

I received a response from a representative after I wrote at length
about the similarities between IBS and CD, although no mention was made
in a prior issue about CD. She said an article would be forthcoming. I
hope this migraine article is not just what she mentioned. I fear
Celiac Disease will not have much attention because there is no pill yet
and no pharmaceutical company to benefit. There are a number of
advertisements in this publication.
