Milwaukee - The annual Democracy and Education Conference will convene
October 10-12 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The conference
is in conjunction with the first mass mobilization and National March
on
the Bradley Foundation at its headquarters in Milwaukee, WI Saturday
October 11.

"In the current age, when repression in the name of national security
and the criminalization of dissent have intensified faster than ever
before in U.S. history, it is urgent to stand up for democracy and
education. We must challenge the right-wing corporate forces
represented
by the Bradley Foundation and its profoundly anti-democratic program
that would destroy education for the people. By doing so at the
October
conference, organized people of all colors from Milwaukee and across
the
country will set an inspiring example of resistance for the whole
country," said Elizabeth (Betita) Martinez, Latina author, educator,
activist, and Director of the Institute for Multi-Racial Justice.
Martinez will be a keynote speaker for the weekend.

The conference will also provide a forum to discuss campus campaigns
and
strategies and gain strength from national networking. The conference
is
open to the public and will include skill-based and issue-based
workshops and special keynote speakers.

The National March on the Bradley Foundation will challenge the racist
and corporate agenda for education and the social, economic and
educational experiments on communities of color propagated by the
Lynde
and Harry Bradley Foundation. Throughout the country the call to march
has resonated with local struggles for racial, social, and economic
justice and democratic education.

"A foundation given credit for funding racist authors such as Charles
Murray ["The Bell Curve"], has no business in guiding public policies
that impact the economic and educational futures of our neighborhoods
and children. The Bradley Foundation is at the center of a web of
right
wing and neo-conservative think tanks pushing ideological and "market"
solutions to the problems of public education. Black and Latino
communities that have been the target of these right-wing educational,
social, and economic experiments reject Bradley's social laboratory.

Our combined efforts at the 'March on Bradley' will expose and oppose
Bradley's privatization and 'Bell Curve' agenda," explained Matt D.
Nelson, Executive Director of Education For The People!

With around 700 million dollars in assets, the Milwaukee-based Bradley
Foundation is the premier reactionary grant-making foundation in the
country. Bradley Foundation has funded a milieu of foundations,
institutions, media outlets, and think tanks created to advance a
racist, pro-corporate, right wing political agenda. The Heritage
Foundation, the Center for Individual Rights, the National Association
of Scholars, the Hudson Institute, the Federalist Society have all
received substantial funding and direction from the Bradley
Foundation.
Bradley provided funding for the notoriously racist book, "The Bell
Curve" by Charles Murray, which argued that poverty is the result, not
of social conditions or policies but rather of the supposedly inferior
genetic traits of a sub-class or human beings [Black and Latino
people].

The conference is also the annual conference for the 180/MDE which is
a
national network of students, educators, and workers dedicated to
democratic education and social justice. 180's member groups work for
universal access to education, the right to organize, civil rights and
diversity, public-welfare research/technology, democratic curriculum,
institutional social responsibility, and/or democratic and progressive
campus governance on campuses and in communities.

"The conference brings together a national network of students,
educators, workers, and local residents dedicated to democratic
education and social justice." Said Andy Burns, 180/MDE Organizing
Staff. We are committed to universal access to education, the right to
organize, civil rights and diversity, public-welfare
research/technology, democratic curriculum, institutional social
responsibility, democratic campus governance, and building community
grass roots power," continued Burns.

All out for Milwaukee, Oct. 10-12!
