You can see what programs are starting up by going to the run command
(Windows Key + R) and typing msconfig.  Control Tab over to the Startup tab.
  Quick Time should be listed here either with the label "Quick Time Task"
or "QTTASK".  You can uncheck the check box.  Then press enter and reboot.
You will get a message about operating with a modified startup.  You will
want to check the box that says do not show this again.  Quick Time should
be out of the system tray.  This will work with any program that startsup.
Some applications check for the startup program when they are run and if
they do not see it they will reincert it.  If this is the case then there is
usually a setting within the program that needs to be changed.

It might be helpful for all of us to find out how any system tray resident
program can be permanently removed.  If someone has the quick answer,
please post to the list.
