Dear WinZip User:

We are pleased to inform you that we have released WinZip(R) 9.0 and a
new version of the WinZip Command Line Support Add-On. As a registered
user of WinZip, you are eligible to download the free WinZip 9.0
upgrade.

We are sending this message to registered users of WinZip. If for any
reason you would like your e-mail address removed from this mailing

--- New WinZip 9.0 ---

Improvements in WinZip 9.0 concentrate on its core functionality:
compression, capacity, and a new, advanced data-encryption capability.

WinZip's new encryption capabilities, included at no extra charge,
support 128- and 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption
for state-of-the-art data security. The National Institute of Standards
and Technology (NIST) selected AES as the standard for both governmental
and private data encryption. WinZip's implementation of AES encryption
is FIPS-197 certified by NIST.

Other enhancements include support for 64-bit extensions to the Zip file
format, which eliminate all practical restrictions on Zip file capacity,
and support for the "enhanced deflate" compression method, which
compresses data better than ever.

For complete information on the new WinZip 9.0, please see the web page:

   http://www.winzip.com/prodpagewz.htm

--- WinZip 9.0 upgrade procedure ---

Registered users of all earlier English-language versions of WinZip can
download a free upgrade to WinZip 9.0.

When installing WinZip 9.0, please do not uninstall your previous
version of WinZip.

You may download the WinZip 9.0 upgrade from the web page:

   http://www.winzip.com/upgrade.htm

Download and run the distribution file (winzip90.exe), then just follow
the prompts to install your upgrade.

--- Security issue in earlier versions of WinZip fixed in WinZip 9.0 ---

WinZip 9.0 includes a fix for a recently discovered security
vulnerability in earlier versions of WinZip.

The vulnerability does not affect WinZip's handling of .ZIP files.
Instead, it involves the MIME-encoded files that WinZip is also able to
work with. The file extensions normally associated with WinZip that are
affected are .MIM, .B64, .BHX, .HQX, .XXE, .UU, or .UUE. MIME-encoded
files with these extensions containing invalid data can potentially
trigger a buffer overflow if they are opened by earlier versions of
WinZip.

We recommend that all WinZip users upgrade to WinZip 9.0, which includes
a fix for the problem. This issue affects all earlier versions of
WinZip since WinZip 6.2, including WinZip 8.1 and WinZip 8.1 SR-1. Beta
test versions of WinZip 9.0 should also be upgraded.

More information about this security issue is available at:

   http://www.winzip.com/fmwz90.htm

--- New WinZip Command Line Support Add-On ---

The WinZip Command Line Support Add-On is ideal for quick zipping and
unzipping from the command line and for automating repetitive tasks
using batch (.BAT) files or scripts. This new version supports AES
encryption and 64-bit extensions to the Zip file format.

For complete information about new features and how to download the new
WinZip Command Line Support Add-On, please see the web page:
