Among other things, SmartFan provides some information about the SMART
status of your hard drives.  Maybe this will provide some insight into what
the problem might be.

I've also seen BIOS updates for hard drives where there apparently is some
sort of defect with the drive generating erroneous warnings, but I think
these were for older and smaller drives than yours.  You might search the
Maxtor support page for information on your particular model, or if it is an
OEM drive from Dell or another large integrator, you might check their site,
as well.
