Probably not a virus. More likely the drive has failed. Take the drive out
so you can read the product label, then go to the maxtor.com website,
support section, where you can check to see if the drive is under warranty.

Subject: [PCBUILD] slamming hard drive
Is there any way to stop a Maxtor harddrive from slamming its reading arm
from side to side?
My son felt he got a virus and this started it. I do not know if there is
any truth in that or not.
