Since this is a sensitive subject, I will be careful in summarizing.
I received 14 responses. Four people were interested in the comments
and concerns of others. Six people had saline filled implants and
four had silicone filled implants.

Of the six that had saline filled implants one has had them for about
a year without problems. One has had them for about 11 years and has
had problems with joint pain and diagnosed with CD for about a year
now. One has had them for 10 years without problems. One has had them
for 5 years without problems. One had them for 10 years but felt that
she had severe health problems after a while, possibly caused her CD
and even since they were removed 4 years ago, is still having health
problems. One has had them for about 8 years – was diagnosed with CD
prior to her surgery and has no problems since then.

For the individuals that had silicone filled implants, one has had
them for about 14 years and has been having health problems for the
past 2 years – but has not been diagnosed with CD even though she has
GI difficulties. One had silicone chin implants for 13 years and had
them removed since she was getting increasingly sick with various
types of illnesses along with CD. One had them for a while, then
diagnosed with CD before having them removed. One had trouble with
hers – had them removed – then had saline filled implants and has
had no difficulty since.

Some of the comments were: “I have been diagnosed celiac and gluten
free for 1 year. I have not notice any problems with implants, but
do suffer from joint pain. I have currently eliminated all dairy,
grains, and sugars from my diet to see if it will go away on its
own.”

“I have recently had the genetic test for celiac and it was negative,
so I do not have CD, but I am still on the diet (since June) because
it makes me feel much better After genetic testing showed that it
wasn't, I then went the route of having an MRI for the breast
implants to. I have also had silicone breast implants since 1990.
These last two years I have had a lot of health problems including
seizures with language & memory problems, kidney stones,
osteoporosis, suspected celiac disease or IBS w/traditional stomach
symptoms--gas, bloating, pain, diarrhea, cramping. I have been
through much testing to be sure that I don't have CD and that it
isn't the root cause of everything, which is what I initially
suspected. see whether they are leaking and could be somehow causing
the symptoms at my insistence (though the plastic surgeon says that
long term research studies now indicate that ruptured silicone breast
implants do not cause autoimmune symptoms) and I also had a pelvic
ultrasound just to rule out ovarian cancer (also to set my mind at
ease). All were negative. The implants supposedly have about a 15
year-life span (about 50% of them rupture by then). If they rupture,
you may have more localized symptoms rather than autoimmune symptoms,
according to my well-respected plastic surgeon. A localized symptom
would be more like inflammation, hardness, soreness, infection, or an
uneven appearance.”

“Some people react to the implants that are in their body-it does not
matter whether it is breast or chin or whatever, the body rejects the
foreign substance and if you are inclined towards autoimmune diseases
and other illness due to silicone being in your body, then you will
start to get chronically and critically ill. There are others,
however, that have implants that never have a problem with their
implants. The problem is that when you put implants into your body,
you do not know if you will respond negatively to it. Once the
disease process starts, it is a slow downward spiral of illness,
disability and death. You can get better -- if you take them out. For
every year you have implants in your body, once out, it takes about
two to three years of recovery for each year you have the implant (I
had my implant for about 13 years, so for me, the recover will take
26+ years to fully recover, if I fully recover) And you may or may
not fully recover, but you can save your life. Are you
scared yet? you should be. If you have implants, and you even think
that you are getting chronic illness that happened after the implants
were put in-then take them out. You can save your life. Do not
replace them with other types of implants. It has been proven that
implants can start to break down just hours after the surgery to put
them in. Do not let anyone fool you on this-and if you want to hear
other's stories, just look up web sites on implants, and go talk to
people who are in implant support groups. They will tell you.
It took me 3 years to decide to take the implants out. I did not
believe, did not want to believe they were harmful and that my health
problems may be caused by them. And one night, I spent 2 hours
talking with four complete strangers about the horrors of implants,
and the next day I went looking for a doctor that would believe my
story and help me. “

“I had Silicone implants & got VERY sick--flu-like symptoms,
Fibromyalgia, joint pain, & bad hives. Had them removed.
Discovered one had ruptured & starting leaking into my system.
Health improved, but not completely. Was then diagnosed w/Celiac
Disease. Health improved much more. On a side note, I was supposed
to have had saline, not silicone implants, but had a very sick
surgeon who put silicone in me(and several other women)without my
knowledge. When I got so sick & no one could find out why, I got
ahold of my medical records since it was when the class action
lawsuit came out about silicone implants making women ill. That's
when I discovered the truth!! Had to trust another surgeon to remove
them. My body image sucks now after going from having nive sized
breasts to nothing, but I won't play God & alter my body.”

“It's been ten years for me with saline filled implants and I've had
no problems.”

“My boobs are now just over five years old (my boob-day was actually
Dec 17) and I have had no challenges whatsoever with them.”

“I think my celiac condition is related to having implants (which
leaked for ten years). I had them removed four years ago, but have
not improved.”

“had silicone implants but had trouble with them. Replaced them with
saline and have been fine.”

“Don't be fooled by what they fill implants with -- the bag itself is
silicone. All bags break down -- some quicker than others. I suffered
and complained for ten years before having the implants (that were
crushed, leaking, and disintegrated) in 1997. Implants are dangerous
and should be outlawed!!! Not one doctor can tell me if my Celiac
condition is related to the silicone poisoning I suffer from even
today. I suspect that there is a connection in that the symptoms
occurred when I thought the implants were beginning to fail.”

“my implants were a combination of saline and silicone. The saline is
apparently harmless. Bits of the implant bag have probably
contributed to major organ damage. I have a large cyst on my kidney
and enlarged pancreas and liver. I also suffer from seizures.”

“Mine are saline... I found there were way less problems with saline
when I did my investigations.”

“I was CD diagnosed in 96 and had my implant surgery later that year.
I have not had any problems due to the implants.”
