Hi listmates

Just returned from my dr's appt. Since my HDL was good and no heart history
in my family I was not put on medication. I have to see him again in 6
months. I told him about some of the info I recieved from my listmates and
following is the summary .

It seems that a rise in cholesterol levels is very common among celiacs.
Many said their levels were low to normal before going GF and now we are
absorbing the good as well as the bad. Suggestions that might contribute to the rise
could be heritary, age, gender, hormones, diet, physical activity, smoking and
not eating the grains that help keep cholesterol down. Also wheat holds
baked goods together and the GF products are held together with a higher than
usual fat content.

It was also suggested to check for hypothyroidism which is also common among
celiacs (I take synthroid for this). One person changed from synthetic
Levoxyl to Armour which is natural. Another said to check for healthy liver
functions.

Foods to avoid:
Fatty foods, cheese, red meat, cut down on refined carbs(high fructose, corn
syrup, starches and sugar).

What to eat:
Canned kidney beans(rinse, drain and add to salads) flax oil, garlic, olive
oil, salmon, almonds, vitamin C and E, lots of veggies, omega 3 fatty
acids(promotes healthy trygliceride levels) like seafood and take supplements( best
source www.american.longevity.net)), tsp. cod liver oil every day, 1-2 tbs flax
meal in cereal or soup every day. Eat more eggs to replace the good cereals
and Brummel & Brown yogurt instead of butter. Have egg substitutes, lean meat
and have fish twice a week. Smoothies with fruit and flax oil. McManns Oats
everyday. Stay on a low fat and low cholesterol diet. Increase folate.

CD diet might be deficient in essential faty acids which can regulate
cholesterol.
Exerxcise 4-5 miles at a brisk pace.
Stop worrying and get stress level down regardless of cholesterol levels to
avoid a heart attack or stroke.

Medications:
Before going on medication see a naturopathic. Medication can cause side
effects and digestive probems.
Chinese Red Yeast(health food store)regulates cholesterol (ex. if level is
200 take 2 a day) no side effects and approved by the FDA.
Satin Drugs:
Zacor
Lipitor - side effects - 1. now taking Zetia
Phytomega -made by Melaluca
Trocor GF - but sprayed with liquid wheat gluten
Vita-Lipotropic - to help clear out liver congestion
