 Dear Listmates,

Some time ago I posted a question as to whether other celiacs had problems with drug malabsorption eg) taking 4 Tylenol 3 tablets and having a serum level reading of the equivalent of just 1 tablet of acetaminophen and codeine. Several people said they also took higher than normal doses or had noticed they did not repond well to drugs. I just saw the gastroenterologist and was told that the this is not due to my celiac causing drugs to be malabsorbed by the gut lining (ie gut lining is damaged by celiac) but due to 'induction of liver enzymes' - meaning my liver just chews drugs up quickly. I have never responded to drugs like a 'normal' person, have no liver/kidney damage after 15 years of higher than normal doses of medications and am wondering if this is due to celiac or could be related to liver efficiency. I also do not respnd to B12 orally until I am taking 4000mg per day (usual does is 25mg per day) - same problems with folate absorption.
Sincere thankyous to everyone who took the time to reply. My apologies for the delayed summary!

Lisa

Replies:

1) Sounds like you have many of the same issues that I have. The neuropathies and the issues with sensitives to drugs...and not responding well to supplements and being VERY sensitive to gluten!. Celiac is a crazy disease and it effects everyone so differently!

2) I know that some meds do not work as well when I am reacting to
something, but have not had levels drawn. Definitely have the support of my
family MD when prescriptions need to be refilled early.

 3) You may want to try B12 injections instead of oral B12. It works so much
better! I have been taking B12 injections for 45 years, since I was 12
years old, and I have just this year decided to do my own injections. I was
so surprised at how easy it is to do! It's much less expensive, too, and
even less expensive than oral B12, especially at high doses.

 4) My whole life I have had to 'over medicate' to get any effect from
drugs....thought it was malabsorption and woul dgo away when I became
GFD and my intestines healed but......have been GF for almost 10 months
- and still find I need more drugs than the normal dose - thought I was
just weird - or was not following the diet closely and thus was not
healing in the proper time frame. I am soooooo glad to hear someone ask
this question!!!

5) I have had elevated liver enzymes and 6 years ago even had a liver
biopsy - this was when they were still trying to find out what was wrong
with me

6) I also take huge quantities of medications before effects show up. My diagnosis was fatty liver.
