Dear Friends,

These articles helped our family solve a little mystery. My son, age 9 when
diagnosed, did not completely heal until we eliminated the oats as well as
all gluten products. Granola was his favorite breakfast (he had it six days
a week), and I was swayed by previous article on studies that showed no harm
to the villi of celiacs who eat oats. So I allowed him to eat the oats for a
year. (I know - it looks bad in retrospect, please go easy on me on this
point). We had been very good about the gluten free diet otherwise. His
health improved, but not perfectly. My son's stomach aches persisted and did
not really go away until the oats were eliminated, as well. He showed
positive changes within three days! At that point he also began to put on a
little bit more weight (just a bit - but he doesn't have that starved look).

When I re-read the previous oats studies, I saw that "serious celiacs" were
not included in the studies, and some people dropped out of the study due to
stomach pain, and some due to itchiness of the skin.

So, I am simply sending out the info for people who may need some
clarification. It certainly helped us. My daughter and I are also both
celiac. I do not get stomach aches from oats, but she does and has since she
was a child. However, I gave up the oats when my son did and I've noticed
that some of my other food sensitivities have become less severe as a result
of giving up the oats - so maybe the oats had a bad effect on me. I have
another celiac friend who also gets stomach aches from oats, as well. I
wonder if there is a genetic marker for this subset of celiacs?

Sincerely,

Mary K.
