I recommend that you install all the software because it will provide
"normal access" to the scanner and some features you might like to use.  For
instance, HP provides a "copy utility" that allows a combination of the
scanner and a printer to function in concert as a copy machine  -- what you
scan can be printed immediately and has a fairly high quality duplication.
