A few people have asked how to set up a spam filter in pine. There are
different approaches that can be taken. The one described below is the one
most easy to setup and maintain. The basic idea is that almost all mail
you want to get is from people/places you already have in your addressbook
because you already communicate with them, or any not there can be easily
added. Instead of trying to spot what you don't want, spot what you know
you want and filter the rest.

1. go to the filter section by these keystrokes, m s r f.

2. hit an a to add a filter, hit enter and give it a name and hit enter to
return to the filter menu.

3. hit w to do a search for bookmark.

4. choose the no optionunder bookmark, this tells pine to do something to
a message that is not in your bookmark file.

5. search for move and hit enter to accept move for the action pine is to
take to messages the filter acts upon.

6. go down one step and hit enter to fill in the name of a folder in which
to move messages you suspect are spam, hit enter when done to return to the
filter menu.

7. hit e to exit and y to confirm, pine will prompt to ask if you want to
create the named folder if it doesn't yet exist, hit y to create it.

8. hit e again and y to confirm. What this does is to move all messages
not from some address in your bookmark list into the suspect spam folder.
Check this folder for the first period of time to catch those messages you
would have wanted and add the address in the from field to your bookmark
list. If you get mailing list mail, add the address in the from field
because the address you might already have for it is the one to which to
send messages and not the one that distributes messages. There are some
specialized additions that can be made, feel free to ask for help if there
is something the above does not catch.
