I don't know your OS so I'll answer for both XP and Win98.
In XP, go to control panel/system/automatic updates. I know of two possible
menus. In one uncheck "keep my computer up to date ..." . In the other check
"turn off automatic updates...". 'Apply' the change.
In Win98, I seem to remember (it's been a while) that it is start/run/type
"msconfig"/go to startup tab. Then find the reference to something like
"critical update notification" and uncheck it. 'Apply' the change and reboot
the computer. As an alternative you can do "control panel"/"add/remove
programs"/ then uninstall "critical update notification". With uninstalling,
the next time you manually check for updates, one of the recommended updates
will be "critical update notification" which you can then ignore.
You might want to also see www.blackviper.com/AskBV/XP15.htm.
Remember to also check other programs which by default also automatically
check for updates. My Norton Anti Virus and my Lexmark Printer were two that
I found.
Hope I've been a help.
