Greetings:
Approximately a week ago I posted a hardware problem,(see below). Noone
could offer a solution other than the obvious one: I discharged some static
electricity and toasted the board. Well, I am nothing if not persistant.
Today, After leaving the machine in the corner for a week, I took a look at
it again -- Same thing. Just for the heck of it I replaced the power switch.
Viola! Good as new. Why the switch chose that moment to die is anyone's
guess. I doubt there was anything, in terms of electrical discharge, that I
could have done hat would take out just the swithch. But there ya go, just
one of those computer imponderables. I'm glad it's fixed; it makes a handy
loaner.

Original MESSAGE:
I recently attached an old hard drive as a slave to a master in a fully
functioning system so that I might transfer some of its data to the master
drive . When I powered up, the machine ran for about 4 seconds then shut
off. I removed the slave drive and powered up again with the same results.
When I pull the power cord out of the power supply, wait 10 seconds and
reinsert it, the machine restarts automatically and the same thing happens.
I have tried unhooking everything with the same results. Could it be that
the motherboard got toasted from the increased load? I tried a different
power supply with the same results. I doesn't matter greatly, I've already
transferred the data by other means. The machine is just one of those old
cheapo HP Pavillions, and I'll simply use what parts I can from it, but I am
curious to get an answer so it won't happen again. Anyone have any ideas?
thanks for all replies,
Glenn Miller
