Are you just doing a fresh install of Win98, now, or is this a system that
you've been running for a while with Win98 and this problem with Device
Manager and the IDE controller is just now cropping up?
In either case, you are missing all or part of the Intel chipset drivers.
You can download these from Intel's website,
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/support_intel.asp. Click on
"Chipsets" in the menu and then select whether you are looking for notebook
or desktop drivers, then select the appropriate chipset, and finally input
what operating sytem you are needing the drives for. (I think this will be
for either the 440LX or 440BX chipset.)
If you are doing a fresh install of Win98, I thought that it contained a new
enough version of the intel chipset drivers that it should have recognized
the controller and installed the drivers. If this is an existing install of
Win98 that has developed this problem over the course of time, it points to
data corruption on the hard drive. You might want to back up important data
on this drive and then run a thorough disk scan to see if you have bad
sectors developing on this drive.
