In a message dated 14/07/97 14:45:03, you write:
<< Also -- is there any possibility of an at-home thyroid test --
such
as the glucose monitor for diabetics? I'd certainly buy one. Who do we
lobby to develop one? >>
No one changes anything that they think they are getting
away with, there is no point.
It goes like this, if a cure was found for autoimmune diseases then an
instant test would be developed to detect them, because the drugs
companies would have to continue to make money. At the end of the
day the drugs companies are out to make a profit, whilst providing
the customers with a service at least expence to them. Like with
all companies though if the customer starts saying "We want more,
or better" they will eventualy make the provision.
Self monitoring gives people a feeling of control, control is important
in any chronic diseases. In the long run it costs less and is better
for the all round health of the individual. The system we have now
has to wait until people are quite ill, along with all the extra side
effects. Self monitoring would avoid many of these long term side
effects setting in, and causing damage to the individual.
If any of you believe that there is a possibilty of a self monitoring
kit then you should say so and keep saying so to anyone you think
will listen. Ask "Why not" if you are told it's not possible.
A good starting point for writing requesting a reason for not having
a self monitoring kit would be your insurance company. Ask them
to find out from the drugs company. Make sure you point out the
money they would be saving in future because people would not
be as prone to all the other ailments that go along with the thyroid
disease. The thing with insurance companies is they will go to great
extremes in order to save money.
Your health, your money, your problem, you should be in control
at all times!
