I understood that the brain *does* need sugar to function. Which is
the reason for the carbo cravings in hyperinsulinemic folks.

This is very interesting to me. Although I am not diabetic, Type II
diabetes runs in my family and I am concerned about possible
tendencies in myself. Do you have a reference on this? I'm also
thinking that this is possibly the reason Sears emphasizes the need
for a bedtime snack on his diet.

This isn't inconsistent with a Zone Diet - remember a Zone diet is
moderate carb, not low carb. 40% of calories consumed come from
carbs (with 30% each coming from protein and fat). I'm not saying I
know it's safe for diabetic folks, I'm just entering into the
discussion here. ;-)
