Hi Nancy, please be sure you get an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your
hyperthyroidism. I was similarly diagnosed in November. My main symptoms
were weight loss and insomnia. The doctor (a family practitioner)
immediately concluded that I had Grave's disease. After reading info on the
internet, I suspected sub acute thyroiditis, a more rare cause of
hyperthyroidism. My hyperthyroid condition began at the same time as a
really nasty virus. I was sick for 8 weeks with the virus.
I saw an endocrinologist, who said it was unlikely I had Grave's because
only my TSH was abnormal, my T3 and T4 were within normal range. He said
that I should just monitor the situation. The only medication I have taken
is proprananol, which helps with the symptoms. Subsequent tests showed an
abnormal T3 or T4 (i can't remember which) so in January I had a radioactive
iodine uptake test. That test was consistent with thyroiditis, not Graves.
Any way there is a big difference because Grave's is permanent and
thyroiditis (subacute or silent- not Hashimoto's)is a temporary condition.
I still don't feel well. I would like to hear from others with this type of
thyroiditis. i am wondering when I will feel well again and whether I can
expect to have a hypothyroid phase soon. Good luck Nancy.
