August is a great time to hunker down indoors with the air conditioning and
finally learn how to design web pages that meet the WAI guidelines and the
Section 508 standards!
http://easi.cc/workshops/easiweb.htm

There will be an extra, unscheduled online presentation of the course,
Beginner Barrier-free Web Design starting August 4 and lasting 4 weeks!
Instructors: Dick Banks and Norm Coombs

More and more people find themselves being assigned to post web pages for
their department or institution even though they do not know HTML. WYSIWYG
(what you see is what you get) autoring software permits you to make web
pages without having to learn or even see the HTML code. Most of the
information about web accessibility is phrased in HTML language. EASI's
course talks plain English and keeps the HTML and technical jargon to a
minimum. You can apply what you learn to designing in most any of the
popular authoring tools although Dreamweaver at present makes producing
accessible web pages easier than most do.

The course will help you to understand the WAI guidelines and section 508
standards. It will walk you through designing pages to conform to these
systems.

However, you may already have web pages that fall short of these standards.
Repairing pages is usually more tedious and painful than designing them
for access at the beginning. The course will also walk you through using
software to assist you in repairing existing pages and to do it with little
HTML know-how.

** August 4 is also the beginning of another month-long, online course
which covers the big picture of making online learning accessible:

EASI has taught online courses for a full decade to well over 4,000 people
in more than 3 dozen different countries. EASI has 8 different courses,
and, if you take 5 courses, you will earn the Certificate in Accessible
Information Technology provided by EASI in partnership with the University
of Southern Maine.
