Hi, I would attempt this, as I'm sure you're probably along the right lines
thinking it's probably the monitor. It's probably a driver problem.
Try going into safe mode and then look in control panel.
(can't remember if win95 is the same as win98, but I do know it's very
similar)
Open up system and then device manager.
Then, remove the monitor and the display properties  and restart, and when
the computer restarts, it should load some compatible drivers. If you have a
driver disk with the monitor, now would be the time to use it.
Should be pretty straightforward, good luck.
(by the way, if you do start it and the colour is not right, as sometimes
happens, go into control panel and then display and you should be able to
change the colour settings.)
