One thing might be worth a go.  It sounds weird but it's worked for me.
Take out the battery and leave it out overnight.  Don't clear the CMOS
conventionally - just take the battery out and leave it alone for about 8
hours.

Ok, motherboard's out of the case, along with the power supply and sitting
on the table. I've connected everything needed to power it up, and still
nothing, except a brief flash of colour on the screen,and lights flash
briefly on the keyboard. (I think this was happening before I took it out of
the case.)
I've tried to clear the CMOS, but still nothing.
Is this m/b dead? (the red light on the board still comes on)
Any more suggestions before I return it?
