Hi Peter, I think I have samba set up already as I can log on to the net
from the linux machine through my win xp machine which has the modem on
it. I just wonder how do I know if all this is working and how do I
access each computer from one another once I have networked them
successfully.
Paul.

I don't know as much about this as some others, but your best bet is to
implement SAMBA on your Linux box. This will allow you to share
directories between the two systems. Of course, you will need to enable
sharing on the XP machine as well as on the Linux box.
