Dear G-L,
Four years ago, in 1998, when my oldest daughter graduated high school as a
national merit and national achievement scholar, I bragged all over the L
about her college prospects.
Then I became embarassed after reflecting upon it and knowing that there
were many talented young Gambians her age who were brighter, but who
nevertheless had slimmer prospects for higher education due to circumstances
beyond their control. I decided I would never come here to brag about my kids
again.

You guys were very generous in your congratulatory messages to me at that
time, and thus, I felt it a duty to let you know that she graduated with
flying colours this Sunday May 12, from Duke University in Durham North
Carolina. It was a great Mother's day present for me, and a source of great
pride for her dad as well.
I thank all of you who have enquired privately about her progress, and wished
her continued success over the last four years. May Allah shower his
blessings on all of you and yours, and especially to our young people who
hold such great promise for the future. I am glad we do have a national
university now, and I hope that all the efforts towards that are sincere, and
fueled only by a deep desire to create opportuinty for our young people, for
they are the future and if we do not prepare them well, we are doomed.
