Hello List,
I found such good bargains while visiting NJ recently, I just have to share. Central NJ is a true melting pot, and everyone enjoys the variety of restaurants and markets available. The town of Iselin in Middlesex County has become like a "Little India" with several miles of fascinating shops and eateries. Since Indian cuisine is not wheat-based, it is easy to find GF meals there. At Patel's Cash & Carry, 1551 Oak Tree Road, Iselin, I purchased brown Basmati rice, papadums, bean flour, chickpea flour and rose water much more cheaply than what I pay at the health food shore. After all, these are staples in this store, not specialty items! At one of the larger Asian grocers, Hong Kong Supermarket, 3600 Park Avenue, South Plainfield, NJ, I found such bargains as rice flour for 50 cents per pound, also sweet rice flour for 50 cents per pound. At the Korean market, Kam Man Foods, at 511 Old Post Road, Edison, NJ, I purchased 5 pounds of sweet rice for $3.69, and cans of coconut milk for 50 cents each. Dried ginger slices cost $1.69 instead of the $3.00 at the health food store. Rice noodles, mung bean noodles and bean thread are also available at reasonable cost.
So - when traveling to urban areas, check out ethnic grocers and restaurants for fun, bargains and in the spirit of adventure!
Good health to all,
Cheryl in PA
