I cannot get away from the fact that all seems dead apart from the fans. Si
it must be the CPU/Motherboard.
So I went again to the computer shop with a view to buying a new processor.
I had thought to go for an XP 2600+ so that I would get a bit of a bonus in
performance for my troubles. It was a reasonable price and, just to be safe,
I asked the chap behind the counter there if it would be alright with my
board - the aforementioned GA-7VRX. Sharp intake of breath. No way, he said.
They would 'burn up' together. I couldn't believe him. Apparently there is
now (or was) a mark 2 version of this board which is/was better.....I had
bought this board just 2 years ago on the strength of a number of highly
acclaiming reviews on the net. I couldn't believe that, yet again I had been
hoisted. I was an original purchaser of a Pentium P60 as a a futureproof
solution in1995.
The shop's recommendation was an ASROCK K7S8X (very cheap})and an XP2600+,
anybody with experience of this board/chip combination? Is it throwing more
good money after bad? Or are there any other recommendations - if the heart
of my PC is going, all options are open for a transplant - except price.
Sorry about the saga
Thanks again for comments and suggestions
