Hi Howard.

It depends upon whether or not you are running JAWS 5 or an older
version. If you are running an older version of JAWS, press INSERT+V to
open the Verbosit Dialog. Say Format & Attributes is the second item from
the bottom in the list of verbosity items that can be changed. What I do
is hit the END key to drop to the bottom of the list and then UP ARROW
once. Then I hit the SPACE BAR once to toggle it on, and hit ALT+C to
choose the Close button.

On JAWS 5, they rolled this option into the new sound schemes dialog. to
turn it on, press ALT+INSERT+S and the dialog opens up. Then, press the UP
ARROW three times to get up to the Say Format in Text, and press the ENTER key.

What this does for you is it causes JAWS to say the word Underline using
the Tutor and Message voice whenever it encounters underlined text. It
will say "bold" when it encounters bold text, and it will say "italic" when
it finds italicized text. It will say "Normal" when it encounters text
with no attributes turned on.

In my work, I have to fill out forms that have been distributed as Word
documents, and I have found this feature to be wonderful for locating the
blanks where I am supposed to type in information.
