I think everyone who says your old pc just doesn't have enough power to run echolink and jfw at the same time are probably right.  Another factor is that if
it's an old machine, which I believe you said it is, it also means the operating system has been on it for a long time.  After you run a system for a long time
and install and then maybe uninstall a lot of programs, and the computer crashes several or many times for whatever reason, the operating system can get
really flakey.  This is especially true with win95/win98.  Sometimes, the best thing to do is to reformat the hard disk and just reinstall everything.  But, for
older machines, that's often just not a practical thing to do.  And, machines are really getting pretty cheap these days.  You really don't need anything all that
fancy to run echolink and other things, so a newer no-frills machine just might be something to consider.

Just a few more thoughts to add to the conjectures.  <grin>
