Thanks so much for your helpful advice.
Sorry to scare anyone in the U.S. about McCormick's seasoning. I am quite certain that the two are different. Ours goes by the name Club House and is owned by McCormick's Canada. They sell completely different products. And this was listed right there on the label as "hydrolysed plant protein." When I was diagnosed I did not realize this was a gluten ingredient and there fore went on eating it until the other day when I checked again.
Here is an excerpt from Club House's email to me. I wrote them and asked about a few products I enjoy:
"Thank you for contacting us regarding our products. We hope the following
information will assist you.
Club House La Grille Rub Marinade Montreal Steak (237 mL) is gluten free
Club House La Grille Rub Marinade Roasted Garlic & Peppers (237 mL) is
gluten free
Club House La Grille Rub Marinade Spicy Hickory (237 mL) is gluten free
Club House La Grille Rub Marinade Oriental (237 mL) is not gluten free (soy
sauce ingredient contains
wheat)
Club House Taco Seasoning (735 g) is not gluten free (hydrolysed wheat
protein)
Club House One Step Tex Mex Seasoning (560 g) is not gluten free
(hydrolysed wheat protein)"
This is good news about the Rub Marinades though! If you haven't tried them they are GREAT!
Anyway, here is what I was told:
Old El Paso mix is GF (I verified this with the company -- all versions of this taco mix is safe) (Once again, this is a totally different company in Canada!)
Taco Time mix is most likely GF (has not been confirmed recently)
Hy Vee is GF
Ortega is GF
GV Packets - Taco seasoning, sloppy joe seasoning, spaghetti sauce,
spaghetti thick & zesty (This stands for WalMart Great Value)
Bearitos is GF
Williams is GF
Of course the problem here is that we don't have access to many Mexican food products. My local Safeway even stopped carrying corn tortillas because I'm the only one that buys them there! There are other stores here that still carry them luckily. Sure makes me miss living in the Northwest US where you have 20 brands of tortillas to choose from.
Please see part II for homemade seasoning recipes... I am anxious to try these!
