Professor Bell teaches aesthetic and the Philosophy of Art, African
Philosophy, and Philosophy of Religion at the College of Wooster. He has
taught a seminar on the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission
and a course entitled "Contemporary Issues of Justice." He is particularly
concerned with ideas of compassion and mercy as a part of thinking about
justice and how communities deal with past atrocities during transitions
from oppressive regime to majority democracy.

Professor Bell authored the book Understanding African Philosophy: A
Cross-Cultural Approach to Classical and Contemporary Issues. Richard Bell
introduces readers to the complexity of Africa, the legacy of colonialism,
the challenges of post-independence Africa, and other recent developments in
African Philosophy.

Professor and Barbara Bell have spent considerable time in Africa. Professor
Bell is on the board of St. Benedicts Retreat and Conference Center.
