Hi, I'm Peter Nichols and I've enjoyed the discussions on paleo food very much. I have been trying to move to a paleo diet since I'm 51/diabetic but I must say I'm not very good at it yet. I've really enjoyed all the letters from folks who are finding ways to make it work. My wife isn't paleo, but she gladly eats it with me when I cook that way.
We have finely made the plunge and bought a freezer and 1/2 of a cow that's partly longhorn, all grass fed. The freezer should be here tomorrow and the beef comes next week. I've never tasted grass raized beef and I've seen posts saying it's better tasting, so let the feasting begin!
I've been intrigued by the posts on eating raw meats/fish. The beef will arrive hard frozen. Does anyone know how safe it would be for me to just thaw it and eat?
We also have a tiny garden and we're ready to start harvesting romaine lettuce and some strawberries. We're talking about putting in a number of raised beds in our back yard and just seeing how much of our food we can grow. Kind of like the old PBS sitcom Good Neighbors.
We have been looking for ways to live more naturally in the city at least until we win the lotto and move to the woods. We're both massage therapists and Kate is taking her licensing boards in acupuncture/oriental medicine. I'm soon to start doing drug and alcohol abuse counseling on my way to a degree in general counseling. So I guess old dogs can learn new tricks.
I think that paleo recognizes a point I've never seen addressed anywhere else, the seasons. It seems to me that during winter we wouldn't have much in the way of fresh veggies and fruit, so our diet would naturally be mostly meat, fish, and nuts, with dried summer produce. Then in summer we would have access to whatever growing stuff we could find.
