OK y'all, since we're gonna talk about the good ol' days, dumbing down
the tests, and all the rest, well, looky here. Courtesy of Ed Hare,
the ARRL technical dood.

If you want to see dumbed down, compare today's Now You're Talking to the incredibly difficult material I had to study to get into ham radio in 1963!

http://www.arrl.org/~ehare/novice63.html

And if anyone thinks I understood the stuff in Question 34, they got another thing coming. I read and re-read that until I had it -- gasp -- memorized and guessed my way through the exam. I thought I had climbed a mountain.

If we went back to the "good old days," today's "dumbed down" contigent would lead the howls of protest.

If you want to see the real reason we are not getting many 13 year olds into today's ham radio, compare what I had to do to get started to what we ask of the 13-year old kids of today. If W1BNB had handed me a 200-page book instead of the 3.5 pages above, I never would have done it. And, if he handed me the 200-page book, then held up the 3.5 pages and told me how dumbed down all that stuff was compared to what he had to learn, I would have thought him daft.

73,
Ed Hare, W1RFI
